The company was founded in 1906 in Winterthur, near Zurich, Switzerland, with the intention of supplying the local metal working and machine tool industry with precision grinding wheels. In those early days the company’s name was "Schweizerische Schmirgelscheibenfabrik" (Swiss Emery Works).
As a part of its policy of manufacturing high quality products, Winterthur Schleiftechnik has always worked closely with the main Swiss grinding machine manufacturers. Through this and other collaboration, Winterthur took part in many important developments in precision grinding technology, and continues to do so with machine tool manufactures from several different countries.
In 1981 a phase of substantial capital investment to modernise production facilities began. To emphasise this renewed technological orientation the company’s name was changed to „WST Winterthur Schleiftechnik AG" (WST Winterthur Grinding Technology Corporation) Subsequently, subsidiaries were founded in the USA and in Germany. Today, Winterthur holds an excellent market position world-wide in the field of precision grinding.
In 1992 Winterthur Schleiftechnik joined forces with Rappold Schleifmittel, a leading Austrian manufacturer of grinding wheels, who looks back on 120 years of experience of successfully making bonded abrasives. In early 1999 the Rappold-Winterthur Group merged their operations with SlipNaxos of Sweden. Today, the Abrasive Technology Group offers secure employment for over 600 people.
