In order to improve the performance of car engines and, at the same time, to reduce the emission of pollutants, the valve acceleration has to be increased. This requires a concave cam shape, or negative cams, which can only be ground with small diameter grinding wheels between Æ 40 and Æ 60 mm. Rough grinding is generally done with large diameter electroplated wheels and the final finishing operation is afterwards performed with small diameter vitrified CBN wheels.
